Texture

Layers

Sophisticated

On the hillside overlooking Balmoral, this Edwardian villa required a fresh decorative approach to give the family home a new lease of life. Moving through the rooms, layers of texture and occasional bold strokes of colour were used, to create warmth and sophistication for empty nesters, game for a change.

Our strategy was to create an elegant retreat and haven for the couple who wanted the family home to better suit themselves, after decades of raising children. Initially engaged to redecorate the master bedroom, a central bedhead was designed, to reorientate the outlook to the harbour view, immediately improving the flow and aspect and enhancing a feeling of spaciousness. Expanding through to a next-door bedroom created a generous walk in robe and also allowed use of space to expand the ensuite from diminutive to a generous scale in keeping with the home. This created a true master feel which the client and home deserved. The brief grew to include most every room in the house including bathrooms, living and music rooms, the entry, stair, study and bedrooms. Using a base of sophisticated ecru and ivory, punctuated with emerald and royal blue, layering of decorative embellishments throughout from flooring to lighting was added. Warm chocolate timber, chunky sisal carpet, subtlely sophisticated seagrass wallpaper, luxurious soft linens and bold velvets were all layered throughout the spaces. Existing furniture was recovered to reinvigorate the pieces rather than replace. Dramatic and elegant light fittings, custom drapery, art and bespoke joinery completed the overhaul.

Respectfully reimaging a home that has been loved and well-worn over decades of hustling family life brings a completely new energy to home that cannot be underestimated. The clients genuinely appreciated the familiarity and comfort of their family home being preserved whilst now experiencing the excitement and wonder at seeing it in a new light. Using preowned furniture, recognising the classic shapes then redressing these in contemporary fabrics or curating materials with an artisanal quality to compose new bathrooms, or bolding designing custom joinery in the study that functions to the minutiae of the client’s needs , we reworked spaces to somehow feel familiar and yet also completely fresh and utterly in keeping with the heritage of the Edwardian villa. The excellence is in the personal nature of the design response, a recognition of the marks of history that were meaningful to the family and that required a light hand to both delicately and deftly gift the family home with a fresh face.
